The Power of Giving Gifts of Stock:

Saving on Taxes, Impacting Ministry!

Saving on taxes while impacting ministry . . . seems like a win-win situation!

When donating to support ministries close to your heart, we often think only of the traditional form of cash gifts. However, another opportunity has been gaining traction at Fox Valley Lutheran for its significant impact—gifting shares of stock. Many are surprised at the tax savings that can be made when donating shares of appreciated securities to nonprofit organizations like FVL.

When donating appreciated securities directly to a nonprofit organization, individuals can bypass the capital gains taxes that would apply if they were to sell the stock themselves and give gifts of cash. This means donors can maximize their contribution to the ministry they support in a tax-efficient way.

For example, Stock ABC was purchased at $100 a share, but has a current value of $400. You would have a capital gain of $300 per share. When you gift this stock, you would not have to pay taxes on the $300, making your gift more valuable at no cost to you. Additionally, you can take a charitable deduction for the current value of the stock.

Does this Gift Option Fit Your Situation?

Two great opportunities to consider would be FVL Giving Day on Tuesday, September 17, or to help furnish items in the Timothy Trout Sports Center. Your contribution for Giving Day could be used as a matching gift to spur others to give generously while helping FVL retire its annual mortgage payment of $475,000. For the Timothy Trout Sports Center, you can see a complete list of needed items by visiting fvlhs.org/sports-center.

Thank you for considering a gift of stock as a way to impact the ministry at FVL and the lives of our students.
