Ministry Anniversaries

FVL Faculty & Staff Marking Milestones

It is FVL’s policy to mark special anniversaries and retirements for its faculty and staff. Special notice is taken at the 25 and 40 year marks. Mr. Peter Sehloff and Mr. Brian Zunker are celebrating 40 years in ministry. Activities Director Shawn Hill, Mrs. Anne Wilson, and Mrs. Gloria Knoll have each served for 25 years. In addition to those celebrating their 40th and 25th ministry anniversaries, four teachers are marking special anniversary years in ministry—Mr. Craig Charron and Rev. Erich Schaser each with 30 years in ministry, Rev. Brad Krause celebrating 15 years, and Mr. Joe Blum 10 years.

PETER SEHLOFF - 40 Years

Mr. Peter Sehloff was initially assigned to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran School in La Mesa, CA. There, he taught upper grades, served as principal, and coached. In 2001, he accepted a call to FVL to teach history and religion.

One aspect of Pete’s ministry that he continues to be very passionate about is his coaching. “It has been a great blessing to me to have coached so many runners over the years,” Pete says. “Winning meets or having teams or individuals qualify for State is indeed gratifying. Sharing a love for running has been a great thrill.”

Pete’s wife, Sarah, teaches second grade at Mount Olive. They have two adult children. Their daughter, Emily, is married and living in Idaho. She is a landscape architect. David, their son, is an electrical engineer near Chicago.

BRIAN ZUNKER - 40 Years

Mr. Brian Zunker’s teaching career began in Kent, WA, where he taught grades 5–8 and served as principal. From there, he was called to St. Paul, Appleton as Athletic Director and 7th grade teacher. He was then called into the science department at FVL.

Currently coaching and teaching in the Biomedical Program, Brian says of his career, “God has always blessed me with more than I deserve. He has allowed me to teach with some phenomenal teachers over the years. I appreciate all they have taught me. I have been privileged to teach an amazing number of students. They have taught me so much about what is truly important. As they are children of God and precious to Him, it is a blessing to be able to teach God’s Word and feed them the Gospel. Every day is another day of God’s Grace. I try to embrace it, enjoy it, and try to not mess it up.”

Brian and Deb, who is the financial secretary at St. Paul in Appleton, have two grown sons, Tyler and Anthony, who both live in Minnesota.

SHAWN HILL - 25 Years

Assigned here out of college, Mr. Shawn Hill has spent the entirety of his 25-year career as a Lutheran teacher at FVL. His workload did change a bit in 2013 when he was called to be the Activities Director, a position that he still holds.

Shawn credits FVL’s mentor groups as being the greatest blessing of this ministry. “In the last few years,” says Shawn, “we started doing mentor group Bible studies every Wednesday. I very much look forward to these opportunities because they are a chance for me to really dig deep into sections of God’s Word with my students. We have always had great discussion in these groups, and I feel like we’ve all grown closer to God through them.”

Shawn has been married to his wife Rina, a Neenah Public School teacher, for 14 years. They have two children, a daughter and a son, who are both in grade school.

GLORIA KNOLL - 25 Years

Mrs. Gloria Knoll was first hired as an assistant in the Guidance Office. After working in that office for 13 years, Gloria retired from that position, but she was hired on almost immediately to help our custodial staff with part-time cleaning.

Gloria’s history with FVL goes much farther than the time she has spent in its employment. “FVL has a huge place in my heart,” she recalls. “I graduated from FVL, our 5 children graduated from there, and now my grandchildren are enjoying the blessings of hearing God’s word daily in a Christian high school with a caring staff. It’s currently fun to see the teachers and students popping in and out of the auditorium as I’m working, and fun to prepare the auditorium for special events.”

Gloria and her husband, Jim, enjoy as much time as they can with their 5 children and 14 grandchildren. A highlight of every year is a special week in Eagle River, where they enjoy fishing, hiking, shopping, and lots of family fun!

ANNE WILSON - 25 Years

Mrs. Anne Wilson’s teaching career started before she graduated from MLC, as she was given an emergency call to teach K-8 for a year in Clatonia, NE, after she completed her 4-year elementary education program, but before she started her optional 5th-year focus on secondary education. After graduating, Anne was assigned to West Lutheran High School in Plymouth, MN, where she served for 11 years. She was then called to serve as a teacher when Divine Savior Academy in Doral, FL began a high school. After three years there, she resigned her call to start a family. For the past ten years, Anne has been coaching and teaching math at FVL.

As Anne reflects on her time at FVL, she claims, “I’ve really enjoyed the coaching aspect of my ministry. I love being with the girls, sharing our faith, being an extension of their families, and creating opportunities for us to lean on each other, to support each other, and to grow in the skills and the knowledge of our sport. All the while God, in his grace, gives us this time to serve him together. High school is just a few short years for the young ladies on my teams, so I cherish the opportunity to grow with them in this unique time period of their lives.”

Anne and her husband live in Oshkosh. Dan is a corrections officer at Wisconsin Resource Center. Their daughter, Hannah, is a year away from earning a master’s degree in Social Work from UWO.
